– Female Muslim students in Nigeria have the constitutional right to use hijab in schools, says Sultan of Sokoto
– Hence, he urged parents to always demand for their rights, whenever they are being denied
– However, the sultan urged them to do so in a peaceful manner instead of open confrontations
Following controversies on the wearing of hijab in schools, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has given an argument in support of it.
According to the respected monarch, female Muslim students across the country have the constitutional right to use hijab in schools, Daily Trust reports.
He disclosed this in Ibadan on Sunday, November 17, while speaking at the 4th General Assembly of the Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria (MUSWEN).
The theme of the event which was held at the University of Ibadan, was “Muslim Unity and Contemporary Political Challenges in Nigeria”.
The sultan consequently urged parents to always demand their rights, whenever they are being denied within the ambit of the law.
However, he cautioned those advocating for the use of hijab and various organisations championing the welfare of Muslims in the country to seek redress in a peaceful manner instead of open confrontations.
Meanwhile, recall that Legit.ng had reported that a female student at the University of Ibadan International School, Ikhlass Olasubomi Badiru, was suspended for two weeks for wearing hijab on school premises. The student was suspended by school authorities.
The letter signed by the principal on Monday, September 30, stated that the suspension would take place from Monday, October 7, to Friday, October 18.
In the letter, the school disciplinary committee stated that the student was found guilty of an act of impudence to school authority after it looked into students’ misconduct on Wednesday, August 28.
According to the letter, the student’s action contravenes the school’s rules and regulations. Her parents were asked to report to the counsellor on Monday, October 21, to present a written undertaking to the school to obey rules and regulations.
